About the Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie)
In the 5 years of experience we have living with and raising Yorkies, we have been amazed with how smart they are – they just seem to know what you are saying! They are fiery, confident little companions that are always very curious and feel obligated to investigate everything. They love trying new things, and are always looking to meet new friends. They are playful, cute and energetic little critters that are sure to put a smile on the faces of everyone around them.
In our experience, and those of many others, Yorkies are very good with kids. However, you need to remember that dogs are dogs, and as is the case with literally any breed, there’s a chance they might growl at or nip a child if injured, scared or when acting in self-defense. In other words, adult supervision is required.
Regardless of breed, socialization is important in lessening the chances of such undesirable behavior (as is educating children to treat their furry family members with love and respect). Proper training early on really helps with these issues, so we socialize our Yorkie puppies with our children as soon as possible. This helps foster puppies that are friendly and eager to meet and play with new family members by the time they leave our home.
